A) Before you started the program, what was the defining moment that you remember when deciding to try OPTIFAST® here at Bryn Mawr Endocrinology?

My defining moment was realizing I was the heaviest person in my household.

B) How do you remember your health changing as the days and weeks of the program continued? Can you quote any specific blood tests, conditions or quality of life improvements that happened along the way?

The changes were fantastic. My cholesterol improved down to 140 from 290mg/dl (with medication and program). My blood pressure improved from 140/90 to average 120/80mm/Hg. The swelling in my legs reduced. My energy level was increased and I started walking long distances again. Best of all, I was fitting in my old clothes and got back my self esteem!

A) Before you started the program, what was the defining moment that you remember when deciding to try OPTIFAST® here at Bryn Mawr Endocrinology?

I decided to look into the program after an appointment with my Endocrinologist. At that time my weight had reached 278 lbs, the highest at any point in my life. My A1c at that visit was about 9%, also the highest I had ever recorded. I was using the largest amount of insulin since I was diagnosed about 10 years ago and my sugar control was obviously very poor. Also the expense of the drugs I was taking was and remains a concern. My Doctor recommended the Optifast® Jumpstart© Program as a beginning to a better care outcome.
I had reached the point that I realized I needed to something to change my results and to develop a serious plan of attack. The Optifast® Jumpstart© program appeared to be an alternative that would assist me in setting and achieving the goals I needed to turn my outcomes around.

B) How do you remember your health changing as the days and weeks of the program continued? Can you quote any specific blood tests, conditions or quality of life improvements that happened along the way?

My daily blood sugar results started to become much more consistent very quickly. Within two weeks the sugar levels began to normalize and become much more consistent. As time went on my insulin requirements decreased weekly. As I approached the end to the program my insulin usage was decreased by approximately 75%. My blood pressure readings are much more consistent and I have reduced the dose of my blood pressure medication by 50%.
My general health is improved with increased energy levels. I had a total hip replacement during the program and I am convinced my weight reduction contributed greatly to a quick recovery from surgery and reduced time for rehabilitation following surgery.
